CUTTING CLAWS

1.     Why should I clip them?

·        Cats cannot damage furniture, carpets or floors.

·        Cats playing together cannot scratch each other.

·        Cats with clipped claws cannot accidentally scratch you or your children.

2.     How often?

·        Clip them as often as needed. Kittens require more frequent clipping than adults who need it about every 2 weeks or so.

·        Remember: when the claws get too long they can actually curl back into the paw pad causing pain to your cat so be sure to clip them way before this ever becomes an issue.

1.     Where in the claw should I clip?

·        Clip from the tip up to about 2mm or 1/16" away from the pink vein that can be seen in the claw.

2.     How do I clip?

·        Sit behind the cat (so that they can't back out and so that you have a good vantage point)

·        Take the paw with you left hand (if you are right handed) and place your index finger on the pad of the paw while your thumb is on the top of the paw.

·        Squeeze the paw until the claw you want is extended, then with your right hand clip the claw after you could easily see where you need to clip up to.

3.     When do I clip?

·        Clip them when they are unsuspectingly napping to avoid any chasing or scuffles which will cause your cat to hate this routine. Most cats will let you do it any time but cats all have their own personalities.

4.     Difficult cat?

·        Try clipping during kitty's nap time.

·        When petting your cat be sure to touch their paws so that they get used to it and not associate it with anything undesirable.

·        When clipping the claws have someone else distract the cat by petting or talking softly.

·        Be prepared with a sound plan of action so that you do the job quickly but carefully.

5.     How Long Does this Take?

·        On most cats it takes about 10 to 30 seconds per paw.
