PRE-ADOPTION TIPS

Now that you’ve adopted a cat…

1.     Diet

·                  Know the times that your pet usually eats.

·                  Know the type of food your pet was eating.

·                  Remember: you can gradually change the feeding times and type of food when your cat is comfortable in your home.

2.     Health care

·                  Within two to three days of getting your cat, bring it in for an assessment and advice for vaccination,

·                  sterilization, and preventative care. Even if you got your cat from a shelter or a pet store that told you the cat is healthy, its safer to be sure.

·                  If your cat starts vomiting, has excessively watery eyes or doesn't excrete within the first few days call a vet.

3.     Training

·                  Training should start before your new cat arrives.

·                  Make sure that everyone in the house is trained to handle the new cat

i.e. children know how to pet the cat properly, everyone knows not to feed the cat junk food, everyone knows to close the outside door at all times, etc...

Start off on the right paw! If you want your cat to go in the litter, not beg for food, not scratch furniture, or not to meow frantically for food check out the training tips for new cats.
